My Ancestral Roots (version 2)

@ Gertrude Street Projection Festival ’17
Through a series of Chinese calligraphy, movements and
visual projection with an experimental soundscape, this work is an exploration of an ancestral migration encased within a pre-fabricated tent. Inside the open tent, Jennifer Tran sits practicing her calligraphy whilst surrounded by the mix of projection art and music. Passers-by are welcomed to enter the space and sit inside to participate in the art of writing. This experimental project explores Jennifer Tran’s complex identity as an Asian Australian, whose ancestors migrated from both China and Vietnam. The work forms a meditative space for reflection of the past, the present and the future of migration and its culture.

Technical Details:
Interactive engagement using creative coding (JAVA) to project images, drawn on a tablet by spectators, onto the surfaces of the tent.
